Changes In the New Era
The twenty-first century has come. This new century has brought changes to every aspect of our daily life, especially in communication, transportation, and education.
One of the greatest
inventions in the twenty-first century is the Internet. The Internet completely
changes the way we communicate; it makes the geographic distance meaningless
and accelerates the pace that people connect compared with when people did before
the Internet era. Back in the day, it took lots of time and cost to be able to
make calls from this side of the globe to the other. Now, we can contact
whomever we wish almost instantly at a much lesser cost. Undoubtedly, the
Internet has created an unprecedented leap in the evolution of humankind.
The technological
advances have boosted automaking, shipping, and aircraft manufacturing to a
whole new level. Firstly, the automobile manufacturing industry makes faster
and stronger engines enabling us to save time and cost by shortening the
driving distance. Secondly, the Shipping industry will be able to build
greater-size ships that can load and transport thousands of tons of cargo.
Lastly, the technological improvements in the aircraft industry will not only
save us time and effort in long-distance journeys but also open new
possibilities and potential in space travel. Consequently, these changes in
transportation will play a significant role in the world’s economic boom since
the last one created by the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century.
This new century will
also change the ways we teach and learn. In the pre-Internet era, traditional
education relied on the cooperation between teachers/instructors and
students/learners. To acquire new knowledge, students have got go to school and
meet up with teachers routinely. Nowadays, in the Internet-dominant epoch,
online learning has gained more attention due to its benefits: it can save us
moving time and erase the geographic distance, especially for learners having
physical challenges. Additionally, both learners and instructors will be able
to access an astronomical load of data stored online in the Internet world,
which effectively and extensively assists their studying and teaching. Besides,
educational transformations are not only because of technological advances but
also because of the shifting of social awareness. People often view education
as the you-learn-what-I-teach model, but today, it will be
I-learn-and-ask-what-you teach model. This new model means that students will
be no longer passive and authority-deprived learners but the ones who will
proactively and critically absorb the knowledge that teachers/instructors
deliver. Therefore, I believe this new model will be a trend in the twenty-first
century.
In summary,
communication, transportation, and education will be three of the various
domains that transform in the twenty-first century. The inevitable changes
raise a question: what will we do to prepare for them?
