Why First Offender Recommit Crimes
There has been a growth in the number of offenders that commit more crimes after serving the first punishment. The reason is that the convicts face social biases and judgments after being out of prison. In terms of the problem, the authority needs to support the first offenders in getting back into the community by guaranteeing them a legal source of income. Also, the government should educate the communities in correcting their perception of the convicts.
People tend to have negative opinions about the convicts regardless of the offenders’ crimes. They consider offenders are deceptive and dangerous to the community. As a result, many offenders who desperately want to change their lives struggle to rejoin society because society labels them as criminals. The convicts lose personal relationships and previous occupations after serving the first punishment. To get by, unfortunately, many of them commit crimes once again. In short, it is the society that indirectly pushes the offenders back into illegal operations.
There are two solutions to the problem. First, the government and non-profitable organizations should promise a legal source of income for the offenders after their first punishment. For instance, the convicts will be able to get a job after they are out of jail. The government and non-governmental organizations may provide the offenders with practical skill training sessions and education opportunities. So, instead of giving people fish, we should teach them how to fish. Second, the authority needs to improve the negative image of the offenders to the public. Specifically, it may collaborate with the press, social media, and NGOs to show what their life stories are. The anecdotes will help the communities understand why the offenders commit crimes in the first place. Henceforth, society may empathize more with the offenders and be willing to give them a second chance to fix their mistakes. To sum up, the government should guarantee a legal source of income for the offender after they finish serving their punishment and change the social biases of criminals.
In conclusion, many first offenders commit crimes again after finishing serving punishment because society marginalizes them. The authority provides them with resources to start anew. Also, it corrects citizens’ perceptions of the offenders.
