Advantages and Disadvantages

Having a new university established is a serious matter but choosing a place to build it is also significant. The location where the university is shall affect the community surrounding it. So, there are advantages and disadvantages to setting up a university in my community.

For starters, the local youths shall have another option to choose when they want to pursue higher education. It will be more convenient for them to study at the university near home. They won’t need to go a long way to the campus or struggle to find a dorm near the university. Another perk is that the establishment will directly or indirectly improve the infrastructure around the university. To provide a safe and high-quality environment encompassing the university, the roads, transportation and communicative system, housing, or even the park may get an upgrade. Finally, establishing a new university will create more jobs for the community. For instance, more local construction workers and experts may have a shot; more administrative staff positions will be vacant for the local candidates when the semester starts. Even the teaching and instructive jobs will be available for the local people. In short, convenience pluses social and economic impacts are the advantages that the university will bring to the community.

However, establishing an educational institution means that the project needs our limited resources. It will cut away vast tracts of land and consume a large amount of water and energy. Moreover, the new university project may negatively affect the environment. The air quality will decrease due to the construction. The industrial wastes might contaminate the water resources, or the project may disrupt the natural habitats. In addition, the new university may cause detriment to the community’s social security. The establishment will attract more people to the community, and the more outsiders come here, the more likely problems will occur. For example, some newcomers may bring illegal substances to the community; the demand for alcohol and narcotic substance might increase, and public security may encounter challenges. So, the depletion of resources, environmental concerns, and social security will be the disadvantages of the university’s establishment.

To conclude, the establishment of the university is like having a double-edge knife – it is functional and convenient to use, but you can also get cut by it. Apart from the educational, social, and economic impacts that the project will bring to the community, the environmental concerns and social security may be the challenges to the university’s establishment.
